My sister has suffered from ME for more years than I can remember now. She's tried hard to be positive but it's really getting her down, every time she thinks she's better back it comes. Usually it happens around January but she's struggling already this year. Does anyone have any ideas of any natural remedies she could try?

Light therapy, definately. A lamp and a dawn simulator alarm clock- it has dramatic results with some people; Also, a magnetic bracelet. Reiki is brilliant also, oh, and Bach flower remedies. Tai chi if she has enough energy to move ( I know how debilitating M.E can be) also- does she have any food intolerances? Wheat, for example. It's well worth checking out with allergy tests.

Yip, she has the magnetic bracelet Gobaith! She also has a sunlight lamp which she uses. She has terrible migraines if she eats too much chocolate or cheese but I don't know about the wheat bit - maybe she should get that checked out.
Thanks Gobaith - and those greedy traffic police have a lot to answer for don't they! They are a pain in the neck - oops, you need a magnetic for that!! Time to start saving up again - when's your birthday?

Hi there agness,

Sorry to hear about your sister, it's such an overwhelming illness and it's so hard to fight the downs isn't it? My next door neighbour suffers with it and it's awful to see her naturally bubbly self being chipped away at. I make her up some essential oil blends inspired by Worwood's Fragrant Pharmacy and she says they help sometimes, I'll copy them out here for you:

for a bit of a "perk you up blend" - 5 drops of geranium, 9 of rose, 6 of tangerine and of grapefruit in 100ml of carrier oil, this can be used in the bath or in an oil burner - she often takes this one out with her and just wafts it under her nose too.

for concentration and thought clarity - 8 drops of basil, 10 drops of grapefruit, 7 drops of lavender and 5 drops of rosemary, again in 100ml of carrier oil. You can use this blend on temples or the nape of your neck and it's also good to have around to waft at will as well.

Hope it helps Smile

Hope your sister feels better soon. I would definitely get any food intolerances checked out. I had ME and went for testing to discover I had raging candida.

I changed my diet over night and within a few months was the strongest and fittest I've been in my life. I had to give up a LOT of stuff, but it was worth it to regain my health.

Get her to take some zinc and obviously she needs to rest as much as she can when her body needs it. The most important thing she can do is not get angry with herself; she needs to love herself. ME is an illness all about 'me' see? Wink

Thanks purenuffstuff n starchild, I will pass your info on to her, she'll certainly try it. I sent her flowers which arrived to day and made her cry!! She did say they made her smile too though! Phew!
When she's ok she's a bubbly person and she hates being tied down with this illness, it's really soul destroying. Actually, I've been taking zinc the last few months and have never caught any of the colds that are going around. I'm hoping it will protect me from the swine flu!

Not particularly natural but I'm taking Low Dose Naltrexone, (more info here: http://www.ldnresearchtrust.org/) it has really helped my physical symptoms, I'm not cured or anything but the effects have definitely been significant. I managed to get a prescription from my GP so it's worth going there first if your sister wanted to try it although there are other ways if the GP won't. It's quite new for use with M.E. but it's very safe at such a low dose so won't do any harm. Might be worth a shot anyway, it's definitely more miserable living with M.E. at this time of year, it does something to us all!

Hi There,

So sorry to hear of your sister's illness.

Not quite what you asked for but I happened across this website the other day....not sure how helpful it may or may not be but thought I'd post it in case anything on there can help in any way. The link is: http://www.survivingsevereme.com/

My daughter has CFS. She has been having homoeopathic treatment and was doing really well on it for a while, even managing to hold down a full-time job although it was a struggle. Then it seemed to stop working and she has deteriorated so much again that work would be impossible.

We recently worked out that her health generally deteriorated after she had mumps which the doctors kept misdiagnosing and treated with antibiotics at one stage. She didn't actually get CFS at that point but started getting a series of low-grade infections almost continually before she finallly got the CFS. Because of this she has recently had the homoeopathic mumps nosode and she is a little better again now so we are hoping that this might get things going again.

In the meantime she does find sticking to a low GI diet and pacing herself carefully to be helpful.

I have often wondered about food intolerances. Can anyone reccomend a reliable way of checking this out?

Hi Agness,

Only just came across your posting form November 2009 and wonder how your Sister is doing now? Have lived with M. E. for over 13 years- now manage so much better since moving to Turkey.

I can happily pass on some natural tips that may help, but bear in mind what may work for one person may have the opposite effect on another- It is so individual..... Here if you wish to make contact...Very good wishes,
Miriam
